Great leadership inspires impassioned followership and for those followers it inspires action and leads to the accomplishment of great things. To be the best leader one can be, it’s important to recognise the special assets that expand a leader’s influence. Here’s a list of 7:
1. Vision
One of the defining traits of an influential leader is having a vision. A great leader possesses a strong sense of purpose and has a plan in place for achieving their short and long-term goals. Even more important is the leader’s ability to communicate their vision, in detail, to others.
2. Authenticity
A leader’s ability to influence starts with self-awareness and reflection. Leaders must get clear on their values, passions, strengths and vision. An authentic grounding builds strength and works towards effective leadership. They are not afraid to share their experiences and values with others as a way of cultivating trust and stronger collaboration.
3. Inspiration
Successful leaders know how to inspire. They model the behaviour and actions they want their followers to exhibit and possess exceptional interpersonal skills. They motivate people so that they identify and buy into their vision.
4. Patience
Leaders require patience to discover others’ dreams and talents. This asset enables the leader to appreciate the differences in what each person brings to the table. Patience leads to results through tolerance of frustration and set backs. It leads to successful leadership.
5. Confidence
Confidence filters through to others and is essential for upholding morale, particularly when things aren’t going to plan. The ability to remain calm and confident has a way of assuring people that setbacks are natural and the correct course of action is to focus on the end goal. By being a strong coach, showing empathy and reinforcing their vision, a leader keeps everyone working and moving in the right direction.
6. Approach
A basic and often overlooked concept of humanity is that we’re all different. We have varying personality traits, different educational backgrounds, cultural perspectives, value systems and language barriers that affect how we process and interpret communication. Some people need to be pushed to work, while others can work perfectly without supervision. Some people work well under pressure; others don’t. To be an effective leader, it’s critical to have the unique ability to customize your approach to dealing with different people, based on the situation.
7. Persistence
The role of persistence in expanding a leader’s influence cannot be overlooked. Accomplishing great things takes time, and it’s important to persist. An outstanding leader is willing to go beyond where others will stop.
