If you had a pound for every time you said to yourself, 'If only there were more hours in the day', would you be a millionaire?
I've met many people for whom time, time and time again is an ever present issue. Rather than accept that there are only 24hours in a day, the temptation is often to resist this all important fact and grow increasingly despairing about the amount of work to be done and the lack of time in which to do it.
However, as Carl Jung once said, 'What you resist persists.'
This may well be an opportune moment to step back, take stock and reflect on a new approach.
Operating under the (perhaps unconscious although mistaken nevertheless) belief that 'a few more hours' is all that is needed will only serve to invite burnout in the near future.
Consider this approach:
Ask yourself what your three main goals in life (not just in work) are. If you find it difficult to narrow down specific goals think in terms of goal areas. So they may look something like:
Now look at your to-do list. How many items on your to-do list directly relate to these goal areas? What can you eliminate, delegate or postpone?
What items on your to-do list will move you forward in these goal areas?
What items on your to-do list always fall to the bottom? (Hint: These are often the ones that 1. will really move you forward in your main goal areas and 2. you may be unconsciously resisting!)
This exercise won't take a very long time, however it could save you many hours, days or weeks in fact!
